  • Round out your fire safety curriculum with Firefighter Flo! by Andrea Zimmerman. The story takes you on an action-packed adventure with Flo and her team of firefighter heroes as they race to put out a fire. The lights will flash, the bells will ring, and the siren will whine as the firefighters speed to the rescue. Your students will love making the sounds, and they will surely applaud these brave community helpers!

Put the Fire Out!

Materials: sidewalk chalk; spray bottles filled with water; red and black duct tape (optional)

  • Strengthen hand muscles with this fun pretend play activity!
  • Go outside to a paved area. Guide children as they use red, orange, and yellow chalk to draw “fire” on the ground.
  • Then tell children to “put the fire out” by spraying it with their water bottles.
  • For extra pizzazz, cover the spray bottles with red and black tape so they look like little fire extinguishers! fine-motor skills

Materials: markers; chart paper (optional)

  • Help your students learn an important fire safety rule through music!
  • Teach children the song below as a call-and-response— you sing the first part, and kids respond with the second. If you’d like, write the lyrics below on chart paper and point to each word as children sing along.
  • Sing to the tune of “Did You Ever See a Lassie.”

    Teacher:
If you ever see some matches,
    Some matches, some matches,
If you ever see some matches,
    Oh, what should you do?

    Children:
Oh, if we ever see some matches,
    We know not to play.
So we always tell a grown-up
    To put them away!

  • Repeat the song using lighters, irons, and candles instead of matchessinging/fire safety
